CONCEPT: A song cycle based on six poems by Balle exploring the wanderlust mind of Penelope, Ulysses' wife.

PERFORMANCES: The New Music Series at the Tisch Center for the Arts at the 92nd Street Y, Manhattan.

"POPE JOAN, AN OPERATIC HERESY"

"Pope Joan, An Operatic Heresy" (Libretto: Denise Lanctot Balle)
CONCEPT: A contemporary opera about Joan Anglicus, a 9th century woman, who reigned as Pope disguised as a man.
DEVELOPMENT: Scenes from the opera were performed by New York City Opera, George Manahan, Conductor.
The University of Maryland Professional Opera Program, Leon Major, Director, developed and workshopped Act I of the opera.
AWARDS: Lanctot Balle was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Fellowship as a librettist and spent a month writing the libretto for "Pope Joan" in Bellagio, Italy.
